Patrick Stewart's involvement is a mystery no more… Or is it?

When the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer dropped, Marvel fans went crazy over a scene that seemed to include Patrick Stewart's voice. They speculated that he would be returning as Professor X from the X-men franchise.

Stewart is currently starring in Star Trek: Picard for Paramount+ and while chatting with ComicBook.com about his turn as Jean-Luc Picard in the second season, he also commented on the Doctor Strange 2 trailer.

He said that it was someone else using his voice.

"You know, people have been imitating my voice ever since I came on the stage 60 years ago. So, I can't be held responsible for that," he explained.

So that's that, right? Maaaaybe.

See, Andrew Garfield denied that he was in Spider-Man: No Way Home when the Spider-Man film was pre-release only to actually be involved in the film when it opened. Like, he lied. So could Patrick Stewart be pulling the same stunt?

The theory about Professor X's involvement has the character cast as a member of Marvel's shadowy Illuminati organization.

Prior to Stewart's denial, he did admit that he'd chatted with Kevin Feige about bringing the character back, but they felt that Logan was the perfect ending.

"Here's the problem... If we had not made Logan, then yes, I would probably be ready to get into that wheelchair one more time and be Charles Xavier," Stewart explained. "But Logan changed all that. Here's a tiny anecdote. The first time that Hugh [Jackman] and I saw the film in public was at the Berlin Film Festival, which is where the movie premiered. Shortly after Xavier's death scene, I found myself getting very emotional, but I had to keep a hold of myself because we were sitting in the middle of this cinema. And then I saw Hugh's hand come up to his eye and wipe away a tear. I thought, 'Dammit, the bugger's crying. Oh, let it out, Patrick.'"

Doctor Strange 2 is about the multiverse, so it's possible that Professor X could pop up — even if he wasn't the version who appeared in the X-Men films. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 6th.
