Tom Holland's new Apple+ series, The Crowded Room, has cast Emmy Rossum as the mother of Holland.

Rossum is 35. Holland is 25. But before you lose your mind, I'm going to share what Roswell, New Mexico writer Carina Adly MacKenzie explained on Twitter:

Guys — Emmy Rossum is playing Tom Holland’s mom because the vast majority of her scenes are flashbacks to his character’s very early childhood when he endured the trauma that caused his Dissociative Identity Disorder. It started before he was 5 years old.

Now, if you didn't know that out of the gate, you probably would react like the many other Twitter fans did.

"Emmy Rossum is playing Tom Holland’s MOTHER?! Thanks I hate it," wrote a user.

"This woman hasn’t aged a day since she was 18 and she’s playing his mother??" exclaimed another.

Disney

They clearly hadn't seen Mackenzie's explanation! And to be entirely fair, it's not like casting age gaps like this haven't happened before.

For some reason, Hollywood thinks any woman above 28 is ripe to play a 26-year-old's mother. See also: Bryce Dallas Howard playing Taron Egerton's mom at 8 years senior in the film Rocketman or Sally Field as Tom Hanks' mom at 10 years senior in Forrest Gump.

Showtime

Holland is playing Danny Sullivan, a man acquitted of a major crime using the defense of dissociative identity disorder. The story is based in part on the book The Minds of Billy Milligan by Daniel Keyes and on Akiva Goldsman's life.

Netflix

Amanda Seyfried is also in the cast. She plays a clinical psychologist trying to deal with Holland's Sullivan. Emma Laird also plays Danny's high school girlfriend "and the only one to recognize his talent and heart."

The Crowded Room starts filming in March in New York.
