The first official image from the Weird Al biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story shows an unrecognizable Daniel Radcliffe in the titular role.
Weird Al Yankovic himself shared the first image of Daniel Radcliffe as the comedic musician.
Yankovic has made a career of parodying huge musicians like Michael Jackson, Eminem, Nirvana, and so many more. He plays off their music videos and makes albums with parody-versions of the big hit songs.
Yankovic's last, and perhaps final, album was Mandatory Fun and it won Best Comedy Album at the 57th Grammy Awards. He has also worked in VoiceOver on Pete the Cat, American Dad!, Bojack Horseman, and many other projects.
The first picture shows Radcliffe in costume and playing Yankovic's signature instrument, the accordion. He also stated that it was day eight of the film's shooting schedule. He joked that a "cosplayer weirdo" (Radcliffe) crashed the set of the movie.
Weird is going to be a Roku Channel original and is being directed by Eric Appel of Die Hart and Brooklyn Nine-Nine fame. The script was written by Yankovic and Appel and will be "a truly unbelievable journey through Yankovic’s life and career, from gifted child prodigy to the greatest musical legend of all time."
Appel also directed a live-action short of Weird: The Al Yankovic Story back in 2010. That version was a fictional biography of Weird Al that parodied other musical biographies. It starred Aaron Paul as Weird Al and costarred Olivia Wilde (Madonna), Gary Cole and Mary Steenburgen (Weird Al's parents), and Patton Oswalt as Dr. Demento. Sounds kind of insane and awesome, right?
Radcliffe, meanwhile, has taken some strange, interesting roles since his Harry Potter turn. He seems to really like finding comedically bizarre parts, so this seems entirely up his alley.
