With the ongoing conflict with Russia against Ukraine, and the potential threat from Russia for the use of nuclear weapons, it may be a good idea to brush up on how to survive a nuclear explosion.

While one hopes that it won’t come to it, it is always better to be prepared. Luckily, a TikTok user with the very apt name Novice Prepper has shared some videos on do’s and don’t’s to his page that break everything down. He is a self-described novice survivalist and off-grid outdoors lifestyle hobbyist, and hopes his videos will help others prepare.

In his videos that have since gone viral, Novice Prepper summarizes the steps the U.S. Armed Forces Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Survival Manual recommends for surviving a potential nuclear blast.

He starts off by saying that anyone within the initial blast radius (e.g. Hiroshima, which had a blast radius of 1.5 miles) should, “bend over and kiss your [butt] good-bye” because everything in this area will be completely incinerated. He adds that modern blast radii could range from 3 to 8 miles.

The video, Novice Prepper says, is for those who are 50 to 100 miles from the nuclear explosion.

The highest priority for people living in these areas is to already have a family action plan in place, which would include everything from how they would communicate, supplies, and safe locations to meet. The most important thing to do after a blast is to hunker down in the basement of your house, according to the Survival Manual.

Novice Prepper states that this is because basements are surrounded by cinder blocks, concrete, and earth, all of which act as a buffer and will decrease the spread of nuclear radiation and fallout.

Another step is to cover windows with anything that would help stop the spread of radiation into your home, including sandbags, wood insulation, and even dirt.

The Novice Prepper adds that if you are exposed to radiation and/or fallout from the blast, you should immediately strip off your contaminated clothes and shower before putting on new clothing. Quick action can lead to a reduction of up to 95% of the contamination that could severely damage hair and skin.

The Novice Prepper went on to say that once you're in your basement, shelter in place for as long as possible. He describes what is referred to as the "710 rule": radiation contamination decreases by a factor of 10 every seven hours.

This means that, to be safe, you should hunker down in place in the basement for 48-72 hours, depending on the strength of the blast and how close you are to it, before the radiation will drop to non-lethal levels. That being said, the 710 rule is more of a general guideline and could be inaccurate, so the longer you can stay in place, the better.

Many users commented about their lack of a basement, and the Novice Prepper posted a follow-up video.

For those without a basement, a little more preparation is required. The Novice Prepper tells users to cover all windows and doors in their homes with anything that they can find, and then go to the most central room in their home.

He goes on to say that whatever you can protect yourself with, the priority is to be as covered as possible, even if that means building a fort and wrapping yourself in blankets.

Don't forget to stock up on food, he says, because you will need to shelter in place for a long while.

Better still, check out the buildings around where you live — are there any that are made of cinder blocks, that have basements, and so on? It would be safer in the long run to go to a more-protected building, if the option is available.

Novice Prepper followed up on his viral videos with an emergency go-bag video, with all the priority items he keeps stashed in his own go-bag.
