Not only are we going to get a new Michael B. Jordan film, but Will Smith is officially returning as Robert Neville in I Am Legend 2.
Warner Brothers is definitely going forward with I Am Legend 2. The original film was released in 2007 and starred Will Smith as Robert Neville, a scientist who survives a virus that creates vampire-esque people. The movie was a huge hit and the studio quickly discussed making more installments, despite the film ending with (sorry, spoilers) the evident death of Smith's character.
It seemed like the whole thing wasn't going to happen in 2014 when Warner Bros. announced that it was working on a reboot of Richard Matheson's novel. Since then, the new I Am Legend film has been pretty dead in the water, but it was recently discovered that Warner Brothers was actually developing a new part of the franchise.
It's been officially announced that the film is happening AND Will Smith will be back. Deadline broke the news that Smith will produce and act in the sequel, which also stars Michael B. Jordan, who is also a producer. This is the first film for the pair. Akiva Goldsman is writing the script and we know no plot details. So far, there's no news of a director attached or release date.
News of this sequel and Smith's involvement are a big surprise, albeit a very welcome one for fans, who have speculated that perhaps the sequel will retcon the original ending. That ending saw Neville kill himself and some mutants via grenade, though there was an alternate ending that the director, Francis Lawrence, wanted: it showed Smith's character live, leave New York, and continue to attempt to find a cure.
But what's really, really exciting here is news that we will see Smith and Jordan share the screen. The sequel could also possibly draw in Goldsman previous ideas for sequels, which included cloning Neville so Smith could return. Whatever the case, we're in for some cool news as we learn more.
