Emma Watson has made a name for herself in supporting trans rights, and the moment she took to the stage on Sunday, March 13 to present a BAFTA award was no different.
Rebel Wilson introduced the actress, telling the gathered audience that Watson “calls herself a feminist, but we all know she's a witch.”
When Emma took to the stage, she pointedly said, “I’m here for all the witches, bar one.” Many online are taking this to be a jab at Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, who in recent years has become infamous for her transphobic comments about gender identity.
Rowling’s latest in transphobic statements posted to Twitter came on March 8, International Women’s Day, which she referred to as “We Who Must Not Be Named Day.”
It was clear to many on Twitter that the Hermione actress’s comment was meant for J.K. Rowling.
Many users called her a “queen” for her statement.
Another said, “Emma Watson is the feminist we should all aim to be, inclusive, supportive and refuses to step on those more oppressed.”
Still more pointed out the ridiculous notion that Watson owes loyalty to the person whose franchise kickstarted her acting career.
Emma Watson has always been a loud supporter of trans rights.
In a tweet from June of 2020, the actress said, “Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are.”
She went on to say, “I want my trans followers to know that I and so many other people around the world see you, respect you and love you for who you are.”
Watson isn’t alone in calling out the Harry Potter author’s transphobia.
After Rowling tweeted her “confusion” in June of 2020 over the phrase “people who menstruate” — saying, “I'm sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?” — Daniel Radcliffe wrote an essay response, published by The Trevor Project in July 2020.
“Transgender women are women,” he wrote. “Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter.”
He went on to say, “According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.”
