Netflix said Wednesday that it will start to crackdown on password sharing by forcing users to pony up and customers are enraged.

The company issued a statement that acknowledged that though it had previous encouraged account sharing, the practices are "impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members."

While it will not ban sharing, you will have to pay up. It's testing the change in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru. For an additional 2.99 US dollars a month, users can add two profiles.

"We recognize that people have many entertainment choices, so we want to ensure any new features are flexible and useful for members, whose subscriptions fund all our great TV and films," the statement said.

Chengyi Long, director of product innovation, wrote a blog post on the topic.

"We've always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account, with features like separate profiles and multiple streams in our Standard and Premium plans. While these have been hugely popular, they have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared. As a result, accounts are being shared between households -- impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members."

Twitter immediately panned the practice. People on the popular online platform condemned the idea.

"Netflix will lose a lot of customers if they do this password sharing crackdown they plan to do," one person said.

"How do you expect families to handle password sharing in the case of divorcees, their children, or college students away from home?" another pointed out. "We already pay a lot for it, now you're just milking us for every dollar spent."

"Mind your business! Respectfully!" snapped another.

Other Twitter users hit Netflix with profanity and mocking emojis.

Users who do not pay can transfer profiles to their own individual accounts when the change happens. That will keep your lists and viewing history so Netflix can keep making recommendations.

In March 2021, Netflix tried to test two-step verification in an effort to push more users to pay for accounts. It has also raised its prices twice recently.
