JK Rowling is being criticized on social media for a tweet she made concerning International Women's Day.

Within a thread that critiqued the Labour Party's position on gender and equality, the author wrote, “Apparently, under a Labour government, today will become We Who Must Not Be Named Day.”

The writer has been in hot water for her views on transgender people. She recently denounced Nicola Sturgeon over a proposed Scottish law that would simplify how trans people are recognized. The Gender Recognition Reform Bill was introduced to Parliament last week and tries to make it easier for a trans person to legally change their gender.

Rowling said the law would “harm the most vulnerable women”.

People on social media quickly condemned the post; one person called her "beyond embarrassing." Another wrote "You could just accept that transwomen are women and save your reputation and your tweets. You have no idea how much harm you are doing."

Another Twitter user questioned the definition of "female" or "womanhood" by asking, "So a person, assigned female at birth, who's had ovarian cancer, or who is unable to get pregnant isn't female? Bearing children is the ONLY marker of womanhood?"

And another person made an apparent effort to point out how useless this all is. He said, "You know, you've [made] more money than a lot of people will ever have. You could do what you like - build a scale model of Tower Bridge, train to run a marathon on stilts, create gardens the breadth and scale of a modern Capability Brown. But you're on twitter, doing...this."

Rowling's views have seen a number of Harry Potter stars distance themselves from the writer who created the massively successful franchise. Actor Sarah Paulson also told Rowling to "shut up" in an Instagram post. Rowling, meanwhile, rejects the notion that she is transphobic. She stated that she "knows and loves" trans people.
