It appears that NASA plans to send nudes into space to entice aliens — again.
The American space administration published a study as part of their “A Beacon in the Galaxy” project, and the nudes in question are essentially binary pixelated clipart of a naked man and woman standing between dots that represent a falling object (to show orientation) and a double helix and are only one small part of the large-scale project.
The pixelated figures are waving as if to appear friendly, and the binary nature of the artwork, as well as other messages they plan to send, is hoped to be better understood by non-human life forms.
The study says of NASA’s use of binary, “Though the concept of mathematics in human terms is potentially unrecognizable to extra-terrestrial intelligence, binary is likely universal across all intelligence. Binary is the simplest form of mathematics as it involves only two opposing states: zero and one, yes or no, black or white, mass or empty space.”
The Beacon in the Galaxy project’s aim is to reach out to alien life forms that may exist beyond the Milky Way.
“The proposed message includes basic mathematical and physical concepts to establish a universal means of communication followed by information on the biochemical composition of life on Earth, the Solar System’s time-stamped position in the Milky Way relative to known globular clusters, as well as digitized depictions of the Solar System, and Earth’s surface.”
The pixelated images aren’t NASA’s first attempt to send nudes out into the universe and are a simplified, updated version of the Pioneer plaques that they sent into space in 1972 and 1973 on the Pioneer 10 and 11 missions.
NASA intends to retire the International Space Station, which is currently in its third decade of orbit around the Earth, in 2030 and let the private sector take over those operations with three low-Earth orbit space stations.
“The private sector is technically and financially capable of developing and operating commercial low-Earth orbit destinations, with NASA’s assistance,” Phil McAlister, director of commercial space at NASA Headquarters, said in the announcement. “We look forward to sharing our lessons learned and operations experience with the private sector to help them develop safe, reliable, and cost-effective destinations in space.”
