Many people have posted to social media reacting to John Mulaney’s decision to bring known transphobe Dave Chappelle to the stage as a surprise guest during his “From Scratch” tour stop in Ohio this past weekend.

One Twitter user shared a breakdown of Chappelle’s racist, transphobic, and sexist “jokes” that was originally posted to Tumblr by user @thenoteworthyhelen.

Another person who took to social media to share his outrage was actor Wil Wheaton.

The actor posted a Bugs Bunny meme to his Facebook page that read “I wish all transhobes a very pleasant die in a fire.”

The Star Trek actor went on to say in the meme’s caption, “I'm sure the trans people in the audience who were there to see Mulaney were just overjoyed to be ambushed and targeted by Chapelle while 18000 people laughed, before Mulaney hugged him on stage.”

“Cool. Cool cool cool,” Wheaton continued. “I appreciate these comedians showing me who they really are so I can never give them another dollar, or consume anything they make, for the rest of my life.”

He then shared a link to a cheatsheet.com article about the incident.

He went on to comment on his post calling out the transphobic commenters: “If you're here to do an ‘actually…’ or a ‘both sides’ or some other bullshit that supports or gives comfort to TERFs, just save me the hassle of blocking you and go away. You are not welcome here.”

Not everyone took his advice, of course. Comments ranged from thanks and support for the stance Wheaton shared to misguided or rude transphobic statements.

Wheaton responded to a number of the commenters, telling one woman quite simply, “Waaaahhh the mean man won't let me be a bigot on his page waaaaaaaahhhhhhh.”

Another person commented that “even the most progressive-type comedians will NEVER challenge or callout other comedians,” to which Wheaton said, “I used to know tons of comedians in Los Angeles. After [I] called out Patton Oswalt for his embrace and celebration of Chapelle, nearly all of them shunned me.”

Wheaton wasn’t taking anyone’s crap, however, when they shared their transphobic views, and even told one person to “Get f-cked.”

“How wonderfully privileged you must be,” he said to another person who tried to play devil’s advocate, “to reduce the dehumanization of people for laughs to an intellectual argument. Bless your heart.”
