Actress Jodie Sweetin was among pro-choice protestors who took to the streets over the weekend after the Supreme Court announced the reversal of Roe v. Wade, and now video of police throwing her to the ground in Los Angeles has gone viral

The Full House star joined those marching in support of human rights on Saturday. She was speaking into a megaphone near a freeway ramp when multiple officers with batons and helmets swarmed her and hurled her across the pavement into the group of people.

With the help of her fellow activists, she was able to get back to her feet and the throng continued to stand their ground against a line of LAPD officers ready to attack.

Police violence against protestors is hardly a new occurrence in the U.S., particularly when those doing the protesting are aligned with political views of particular interest to the left. By October 2020, five months after George Floyd was killed, over 1000 incidents of police brutality against mostly peaceful protestors had been reported, with many videos showing a lack of provocation from activists circulating after each march.

Similarly, reports of police overreacting with riot gear, tear gas, and general aggression to peaceful protestors for reproductive rights have already started growing in the last several days. These incidents have become particularly striking in the aftermath of the January 6 attack on the Capitol, where police seemed more interested in taking selfies with rioters.

Although the incident with Sweetin isn’t isolated, because of her name, it’s drawing attention to both the protests themselves and the way police across the country are once again the ones escalating things at these events.

Some criticized Sweetin and the other protestors for being on the freeway in the first place, as if even peaceful protesting is supposed to be something that can be easily ignored by those who’d rather get on with their lives, but others quickly shut that down with a reminder that non-violent action that breaks the law still doesn’t warrant violent reaction from police.

And Sweetin herself spoke out after the footage circulated online, saying in a statement, “I’m extremely proud of the hundreds of people who showed up yesterday to exercise their First Amendment rights and take immediate action to peacefully protest the giant injustices that have been delivered from our Supreme Court.”
