While on the convention circuit recently, Neve Campbell announced that she would not be returning to the sixth installment of the “Scream” franchise.
“Sadly I won’t be making the next Scream film,” she said, according to Deadline.
Word began going around that the Sidney Prescott actress was telling fans at conventions that she wasn’t returning, and she announced it officially to Deadline this past Monday, stating that she had declined an offer to return that was below her market value as an established actress.
"As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream," Campbell told Deadline. "I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise."
"It's been a very difficult decision to move on," she went on. "To all my Scream fans, I love you. You've always been so incredibly supportive to me. I'm forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years."
The horror movie franchise first got started in 1996 when its monumental first movie, which was directed by Wes Craven, hit movie theaters. It was a resounding success and earned $173 million at the box office (well over $300 million converted for inflation to 2022’s value). The series of films centers on killers wearing Ghostface costumes running around murdering people, and Cambell has starred in the first five films alongside David Arquette and Courteney Cox.
The most recent Scream installment, released earlier this year, brought in over $140 million worldwide at the box office.
Scream 6 is set to hit theaters on March 31, 2023.
One self-proclaimed “super fan” posted his disappointment to Twitter, saying, “Neve Campbell is the next best thing after Wes Craven. What they should’ve done was ASK HER personally where she wants the story to go and I’m sure it would’ve been a great collaboration.”
