TikTok was recently taken by storm when the realization that Diane Lane was 38 years old when she starred in the film Under the Tuscan Sun. For most Millennials, that movie came out when we were in our late teens. Diane Lane—unlike those of us who were freshly old enough to vote and (maybe) get legally drunk—was an adult adult.
TikToker Aimée Lutkin—who is also the author of The Lonely Hunter: How Our Search for Love Is Broken—recently posted a video in which she answered the question, "How do YOU know you're getting old?" And that answer was that Lutkin is the same age now that Diane Lane was when she starred in Under the Tuscan Sun—an age that once, somehow seemed impossibly old and far-off.
"I watched it," she says of the film, noting that her nineteen-year-old self considered the film to be "for older women who were . . . going through some kind of mid-life crisis."
When looked up Diane Lane's age at the time of filming, she says, she was shocked. "This was shocking to me, because my perception of Diane Lane is that she's an older woman—because, of course, I knew her first when I was a teenager, and in the movie Under the Tuscan Sun, I thought of her as 'an older woman.'"
"But I am 38!" Lutkin contained, saying she immediately wondered, "Oh my God, do I look as old as Diane Lane does in this movie?!"
"And the answer," Lutkin concludes, "is that I look far worse! Look at her. I look like Diane Lane's fart."
TikTok was actually very supportive (and Lutkin looks fantastic and supercute, by the way).
