Hurricane Ida swept all the way up from New Orleans to the east coast, causing massive flooding and tornadoes around New York and New Jersey and at least eight deaths, Marketwatch reports. A state of emergency was declared and every subway line was shut down, stranding people all over the boroughs. The BQE, FDR Drive, and Bronx River Parkway were turned into rivers, and videos showed vehicles everywhere submerged and even floating away on the current of water.
It was the first time ever that the National Weather Service office in New York declared a flash flood emergency, in which an "exceedingly rare" situation offers a "severe threat to human life and catastrophic damage from a flash flood is happening or will happen soon.”
No one was supposed to be traveling except in an emergency, but many people stuck at home took video of the waters flooding their streets and their apartments.
The video footage looks like it's from an apocalypse movie, and it seems to be sinking in that this will be our future from now on and we don't nearly have the infrastructure needed as climate disaster sets in. This isn't a movie—it's real life:
