Will Smith made an appearance at the Savoy Theatre in London to promote his new autobiography, Will. There, he spoke with Idris Elba.

The actor shared his financial troubles with taxes that led to him borrowing $10,000 from a drug dealer.

"I'm not sure what the government is like with taxes in the UK, but in the US they take it seriously," Will Smith said to the audience in a video from Metro.

"So Uncle Sam wanted his money. I didn't forget — I just didn't pay."

"I had to sell everything, and I knew whatever my new life was going to be I could feel it was going to be in Los Angeles. So I borrowed $10,000 from a friend of mine who was a purveyor of neighborhood pharmaceuticals," he explained. The audience laughed.

Elba quipped back, "Was his name Stringer Bell?" in reference to the character he played on HBO's The Wire.

Smith also said he nearly had to file for bankruptcy before moving to Los Angeles and hitting it big with the lead role on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

In Will's book, Will Smith: A Biography, Smith says that the IRS garnished 70% of his wages from the first three seasons of the show. Ouch.

Smith closed out the evening with a medley of his hits with Jazzy Jeff. They played "Brand New Funk," "Switch," "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," and "Summertime."

He is currently on a five-date book tour to promote his new memoir. He started in his hometown, Philadelphia, and made stops in Brooklyn, New York; Chicago; Los Angeles; and London.

Will came out on November 9th. Smith also currently stars in HBO's King Richard, which has been receiving incredibly strong reviews — both as a film and for Smith's performance in particular. You can catch that film streaming on HBO or in theaters.
