Ben Affleck is getting dragged by the entire Internet right now because he seems to have forgotten that fans are well aware of the timeline of his relationship with Jennifer Garner and alcohol. In a recent interview with Howard Stern on SiriusXM’s "The Howard Stern Show" the actor made a comment about how if he hadn't split with Garner, he wouldn't have gotten sober.
"We probably would’ve ended up at each other’s throats. I probably still would’ve been drinking," Affleck said. "Part of why I started drinking was because I was trapped."
He continued, "I was like, 'I can’t leave because of my kids, but I’m not happy, what do I do?' And what I did was [I] drank a bottle of scotch and fell asleep on the couch, which turned out not to be the solution."
The 49-year-old actor went to rehab in 2018. In fact, Garner drove him there herself even though it was three years after their split in 2015. Affleck says he tried to stick with the marriage for the sake of his two daughters and one son, Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel.
"Ultimately, we tried, we tried, we tried because we had kids, but both of us felt like we didn’t want this to be the model that our kids see of marriage," he said. "Everything you read [in the news about the divorce] was bulls–t. The truth was we took our time, we made our decision … We grew apart...We had a marriage that didn’t work. This happens. She’s somebody I love and respect, but to whom I shouldn’t be married any longer."
If that's true, some fans are wondering why he's now trying to pin his drinking on his ex-wife. The outrage is loud:
Though Garner stans are raging, Affleck also claimed in his interview that he and the mother of his children are on good terms, actually.
"We did it amicably. We did our best. Did we have moments of tension? Did we have disagreements over custody? Was stuff difficult for us? Did we get angry? Yes, but fundamentally it was always underpinned with a respect," he said, adding, "I knew she was a good mom. I always hoped she knew I was a good dad. I knew I was."
Well, now your kids know how you felt about being in that family, which is certainly some kind of parenting.
