There are people who will argue that Hollywood just isn’t making movies like it used to. While some may think the latest movies being released lack originality, others just prefer the classics. Whatever the reason, most people feel strongly connected to movies of their past and it shows.
In a recent Reddit thread, users are answering the question: "You have to recommend an absolutely must see, pre-2000 movie to a teenager…which one is it?"
There’s no shortage of nostalgia as folks share their recommendations. Answers include classic franchises like The Matrix and Back to the Future, as well as some cult classics like, Office Space.
Here are 20 of the best pre-2000 movies, according to Redditors.
1. The Matrix
And only the first one was made before 2000 so it's perfect.
2. Terminator 2: Judgement Day
IMO T2 is the quintessential big budget 90’s action movie. It’s as close to a masterpiece as you can get.
3. The Truman Show
The Truman Show has marked me, and I feel like this is even more relevant than back then.
4. Jurassic Park
I was born too late for the Star Wars craze but I hear my older friends and family members go on about how incredible it was, watching the first Star Wars in the theatre. Jurassic Park is the same for me and my friends who are in our late 30s/early 40s; we all vividly recall seeing those dinosaurs on that giant movie screen, and how it changed the way movies were viewed from that point on. Absolutely incredible.
5. Back to the Future
This one. Hands down.
6. Office Space
Surprisingly, only gets more accurate over time.
If you go the college-educated route, there is a good chance this will be your life. Yeah, yeah, we have open office plans now which knocked down the actual cubicle walls, and the computer screens have gotten flatter, but Lumbergh and Milton still exist.
7. The Fifth Element
Well now I have to go watch it again, it's been too long.
8. Raiders of the Lost Ark
Just showed this to my 15yo nephew and he liked it.
9. Airplane
I feel like a lot of older comedies haven't aged very well, but Airplane is still just as funny now as when it was new, and a lot of the humor definitely is the type that appeals to a teenager.
10. Saving Private Ryan
Yes the opening scene is graphic but that’s the point.
11. My Cousin Vinny
Love this movie so much. So many great lines that I use all the time and no one gets.
12. The Princess Bride
That movie can be watched in any setting with any group of people.
13. Ferris Bueller's Day Off
I recently got showed Ferris Bueller's Day Off and now I recommend it to loads of people.
14. Trainspotting
That'll keep 'em off the junk.
15. The Thing
This HOLDS UP. saw it at the local cinema before Halloween and it was still terrifying, even after seeing it on a million old TVs in a million old semi-finished basements.
16. Tremors
This move TERRIFIED me at 8 years old. Rewatched it last year, 30 years later. F--kin hilarious.
17. Ghostbusters
So they can know that there's a good reason they keep going back to that well - the first one kicked f--king a--.
18. The Mummy
Brendan Fraser is a treasure of an actor and a human.
19. The Lion King
I’m not sure if it’s a must see but it’s a good movie and I feel like there wouldn’t be many people that would hate it or be super bored by it.
20. Addams Family and Addams Family Values
They’re like perfect little time capsules to the 90’s and honestly they’re a rare set of movies that no matter how many times I’ve watched I find myself enjoying them.
They’re endlessly quotable, I like the message, I like the actors, I like the aesthetic, I like it all!
They’re as perfect to me now at 30+ as they were 20+ years ago when I discovered them, and I think anyone in the Gen Z generation can find something to love if they go in with an open mind about them.
