Marvel's Stan Lee, a beloved figure in the comics community, died a little over three years ago. His Twitter account remains alive in a zombie sort of way, and now it looks like whoever is running it is trying to make a big buck off of his four million followers.
On Tuesday, a tweet from Lee's account was used to promote NFTs, a version of cryptocurrency connect to art content and something that Keanu Reeves can't stop laughing about. It read, "From championing diversity to embracing new tech, Stan was 1 step ahead of the curve. To honor his innovative spirit, Stan's 1st Indian hero, Chakra The Invincible, debuts in his own NFT (digital art) collection from 7:30 pm PT 12/27-12 pm PT 12/29!"
Lee died without ever having to learn what NFTs are, which is a small mercy. But his real fans are really not happy with seeing their hero shill them:
A perhaps unexpected champion of Lee turns out to be Dictionary.com, who jumped in with a tweet that made a huge comment on the whole situation.
"The verb 'defile' was first recorded in 1275–1325, and comes from the Old French word 'defouler,' meaning 'to trample on, violate,'" they wrote.
