Sony's Marvel Universe of Spider-Man characters has taken on Madame Web and brought in Dakota Johnson to star. She will be the first woman to headline a Sony/Marvel superhero film.

Marvel

Since The Amazing Spider-Man, Sony has been working to build out a universe for Spider-Man and the supporting characters of his world. They made strides with two successful Venom films and Morbius as well as a slew of new movies that are being developed for other characters.

Spider-Man: No Way Home was Sony's biggest movie of all time and grossed an amazing amount of money, so the studio is, naturally, hurling cash at anything Spider-Man-related. Last month, it was announced that Madame Web may start production in 2022. With Dakota Johnson now involved, we'll likely hear more about production and release timelines.

ComicBook's Kofi Outlaw explained the source material: Cassandra Webb is a mutant born in Salem, Oregon with a neuromuscular disease. She is paralyzed and blind but has telepathy, clairvoyance, and precognition, so she can see things her eyes physically cannot. Think Oedipus, yeah?

She gets her name from her life-support machine, which looks like a giant spiderweb.

She is the grandmother of Charlotte Witter, who becomes the villain Spider-Woman, and is tied to Julia Carpenter, the Spider-Woman who worked with The Avengers. When Cassandra is about to die, she gives her psychic abilities to Julia, transforming her into the second Madame Web.

Bad Times at the El Royale / Fox

Kinda cool, right? And it's really neat that we get a slew of women and their "genealogies" throughout the universe.

S.J. Clarkson of Jessica Jones fame is going to be directing Madame Web, which was written by Matt Salaam and Burn Sharpless.
