When Johnny Depp took the stand on Wednesday in his defamation trial against Amber Heard, he played recordings from their arguments that he had taken in secret where his now-ex-wife admitted to hitting him.
Heard claims in the recordings that while she did hit him, the details were fuzzy because she was “on an Ambien” at the time.
“I feel that I want to say something to you, that it was ok, that’s, that’s the promise you gave me a little while ago,” Depp says in the recording. “I’m — I’m telling you, if you lost memory last night of kick — you kicking the bathroom door and hitting me in the skull.”
Then Heard interrupts him on the recording, so he asks her again if she “has those memories” of their fight.
“I was upset, there was a lot going on and I was on an Ambien!” Heard shouts at him. “Why are you obsessing over the fact I cannot remember the way you are remembering it. I said I was sorry — I’m not denying it.”
Depp also makes reference to a previous fight the ex-couple had later on in the recording, back when he was in the middle of filming the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie. This is the fight where Depp claims Heard severed off part of his finger via a broken vodka bottle.
He says, “It’s not to get you mad … it’s just to get out of a bad situation while it’s happening before it gets worse. In Australia when we had the big fight, when I lost the tip of my finger, at least five bathrooms and two bedrooms I went to.”
Heard can then be heard complaining that Depp always ran away from their fights rather than addressing them.
“You don’t escape the fight, you escape the solution! You escape figuring out. We cannot work it out if you run away to the bathroom every time.”
Depp then stated in the recording that they weren’t able to reconcile their issues, saying, “Bang bang, you kept coming to get me.”
The actress said later in the recording, “One does not negate the other. That’s irrelevant. That’s a complete non sequitur. Just because I threw pots and pans does not mean you come and knock on the door.”
Depp asked if he should continue to let her throw things at him, which she says is putting words in her mouth.
“I’m justifying how you seem to think that there’s this cowardice in me that runs away and I don’t fight for you,” Depp then says.
“Babe, you are not punched,” Heard says in the recording. “I’m sorry that I didn’t hit you across the face in a proper slap, but I was hitting you, it was not punching you [...] I did not f**king deck you. I f**king was hitting you.”
Other incidents that Depp detailed included a claim that Heard “roundhouse” hit him on the cheekbone in front of her sister, Whitney Henriquez, and he described to the court a time when Heard allegedly struck him in the head with a bathroom door.
