On Thursday, April 21, Amber Heard’s legal team brought up violent text messages sent by Johnny Depp throughout their relationship, including one in which he said, “I will f—k her burnt corpse afterwards to make sure she is dead.”

Depp admitted to the sometimes violent text messages in the cross-examination by Heard’s lawyer, J. Benjamin Rottenborn. Rottenborn read out many of the text messages. In 2013, Depp texted friend Paul Bettany, “Lets burn Amber!!!” followed by “Let’s drown her before we burn her!!!”

Rottenborn followed up saying, “You said, ‘I will f—k her her (sic) burnt corpse afterwards to make sure she is dead’… and you wrote that about the woman who would later become your wife.”

Depp replied, “Yes, I did.”

Later in 2015, Depp texted an unnamed contact with the label “sis.” Rottenborn and Depp surmised that this could have been Heard’s sister. The text read, “I’m alright. Though, I never ever want to lay eyes on that filthy whore Amber.”

“When you called Amber that ‘filthy whore’, she was your wife at the time, correct?” Rottenborn asked, to which Depp said yes.

A text from 2014 written by Depp said, “I’ll smack the ugly cunt around before I let her in.”

A lot of the texts in question clearly show that Depp was struggling with substance abuse at the time.

In the texts, he references the heavy use of both drugs and alcohol, calling his reliance on them the “monster.” It’s a term Depp said he used to appease Heard, and is used with others, not just her.

Depp said in the trial he had tried most drugs by the time he was 15. “They’ve always been a medicine for me. A numbing agent.” He wrote to Heard in December 2014 that he’d “let it get too far”

“We/I tend to do that. I don't want to be conditioned to continue that behaviour. Therefore I'll put in heavy work with drink. I'm sorry for being less… I’m a f—king savage. I’ve got to lose that… Know that you are right I am well aware that I should have been bigger than the moment, and that it'll never again manifest in negative experiences. It can be done.”

In the three days since Depp took the stand to testify, he has denied claims that he abused Heard and said that she herself was the violent one.

He went on at length about the abuse he suffered as a child from his mother, discussing the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and finally how his relationship with Heard drastically changed over time.

Additionally, Heard’s legal team officially submitted the claim for the first time of Depp sexually assaulting Heard. They alleged that Depp went on a three-day, drug-fueled bender in Australia in 2016, where he threw bottles at her and “[penetrated] her with a liquor bottle.”

Depp’s spokesperson denied the claims and called them “fabricated.”

The trial is currently in its second week and will likely last around six weeks. Heard is expected to testify later on in the trial.
