Everyone knows about The Slap from Oscars night at this point. Celebrities and fans alike have spoken up about Will Smith’s actions, from those supporting his defense of wife Jada Pinkett Smith to those saying that it was a gross overreaction to a distasteful joke about her hair loss, caused by the autoimmune disease alopecia.
One of those who remains unimpressed and called out Smith for his actions was actor and comedian Jim Carrey.
In an interview with Gayle King of CBS Mornings, Carrey said, “I was sickened by the standing ovation. I felt like Hollywood is just spineless, en masse, and it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we aren’t the cool club anymore.”
He thought that Smith should have been escorted from the building, and said had it been him, “I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million, because that video is going to be there forever, it’s going to be ubiquitous.”
“That insult is going to last a very long time,” he went on. “But you do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face because they said words.”
Gayle King suggested that the joke had “escalated” to violence, but Carrey disagreed with her word choice.
“It didn’t escalate, it came out of nowhere!” he said. “Because Will has something going on inside him that’s frustrated. And I wish him the best, I really do. I don’t have anything against Will Smith. He’s done great things, but that was not a good moment. It cast a pall over everyone’s shining moment last night.”
People on the internet, however, are chomping at the bit to criticize Carrey’s past actions, which aren’t exactly perfect and rosy.
Others brought up Carrey’s public criticism of vaccines, and how he believes that they cause autism, a claim which has been debunked by medical professionals.
The researchers who made these claims did so fraudulently by cherrypicking data to suit their hypothesis. Andrew Wakefield, the main anti-vaccine researcher involved in the publication, was struck from the medical register and is not legally allowed to practice medicine.
The tweets this user refers to have since been deleted, though they are still visible on the New York Daily News YouTube channel.
